Twenty-5 years ago this August, the Mall of America, America’s largest procuring mall, opened its many, many doorways for business. The Minnesota mall is presently wrapping up a 12 months of celebration on the dizzyingly vast temple to consumerism. It’s a celebration that comes, sarcastically, as America’s malls are dying. But not the Mall of America.
The dying of America’s malls might not affect cities in the same means that their start did, destroying many of the country’s downtowns. But the shift from brick-and-mortar shops is already reshaping the employment market.
